Target Planning More Store Remodels...

Target is speeding up their store remodeling plans, with 2018 bringing nearly triple the number of remodels. This is part of their effort to reimagine more than 1,000 stores across the country by the end of 2020.

According to A Bullseye View, Target is tailoring each remodel to meet the specific needs of local guests, so no two remodels will look exactly the same. And to stay true to their sustainability efforts, they'll continue to add features like LED lighting and solar panels to many stores—efforts that have helped more than 80% of stores to become Energy Star certified.

Other plans include adding music in the background, a more modern design aesthetic across the store, and enhanced merchandise presentations, including areas that showcase trends and top-of-mind products for the season. Many stores will have features that help them get online orders to guests even faster, like a bigger Order Pickup counter or a Drive Up lane in the parking lot. I personally have noticed the addition of more self-checkout lanes at my local stores, as well as re-vamped grocery sections illustrated in the before/after pics shown here.

What's your take, readers? Have you noticed whether your local store has been remodeled, and if so, do you like the changes?

I think it's fine.

The downtown Minneapolis store is a minute from where I both live and work, and the remodel is quite nice. Minimal disruptions during the six months, the most inconvenient being the grocery area. People seem to really like. They’ve increased the self checkouts also, which are popular apparently (I’m not a fan, but they didn’t ask me - lol). Feels and looks less “discount/big box” and more like a next generation department store. I’m interested in seeing how they merchandise the cross-category Hunter collaboration next month!

They've remodeled the stores in the Chicago area, and have now moved on to the suburban stores. For the most part the changes have a much more modern feel, and certain parts of the store, particularly the home goods type stuff, feel more expansive. I feel like they have actually made the grocery section smaller while expanding the alcohol sections, including building walk in coolers in a few stores. I hate the layout of the clothing departments. The way the women's department is set up is not great. It feels crowded and difficult to navigate, especially with a cart. Overall the stores have a nicer look, but there are still some things they need to improve.

Displaced Southerner, I agree that it seems like the grocery section is smaller in order to make room for more liquor offerings. And while I like some of the displays in the Women's Department, I don't like the shoes thrown in with the clothes. And a couple of my local stores now (oddly enough) don't have clearance racks anymore. Instead, the clearance items are hidden within the regular priced stuff. It's almost as if they're trying to 'hide' the stuff that's on sale!
